The world's your oyster Jon

Dougie's friend Jon is 'retiring'. Dougie wanted a card and he gave me a fairly specific brief. A font like 'Indiana Jones' and to use some of Jon's hobbies and interests as illustration for a card that holds a voucher for a Yachting experience for two. This is what I came up with after some input from the creative director.

Jon's farewell party was also part of his work Christmas party, so we had a chance to relax down by the John Oxley.

More waiting

I guess I freaked out today. I knew working with after effects was going to be challenging. Only because I have used it very little. I couldn't remember all the steps and my notes didn't cover everything that Jack showed me. So a bit of a panic. After 4-5 hours playing around with the program I seem to be getting somewhere.

I have a basic test..that is STILL rendering. WAITING!

Waiting

for over 500 images to download...
It's hot, humid and almost 2am. The mosquitos haven't given up yet, and neither have I. ...images waiting in the transfer queue is now 326 and then I'll go and take some more shots for my animation.

I haven't blogged much recently, Graduation show is only days away (tuesday coming) and the pressure is on. Every minute is allocated for. Including the ones around 3am.

More books on the wanted list

Once again thanks to Sur La Lune for 'Library Essentials Month'.
A dictionary of British folktales in the English language [Set 1 Narratives set two Legends] by Katherine M. Briggs, here's is the Folio Society's publication and their youtube promo. As lovely as they are I don't think I could afford the Folio editions, there are paperback copies out there!

Some like it... hotter

phew, today was hot, about 32c....which is lovely unless you also spend 6 hours of it in the hotshop blowing glass. For the evening shift Nadine and I took a break after each object, letting the pink from our faces fade before we got back into it. Lots of water was consumed, but somehow it is never enough.

another day another book that I want

Thanks to Sur La Lune's 'Library essentials month' there is yet another book that I need to get. I did check the university library for "The great fairytale tradition: From Straparola and Basile to the Brothers Grimm" well I searched by the first part of the title..to which the search results asked
"Did you mean the 'the great air table production'?"   NO I did NOT....wait you mean there's a book on that? and no there is no result to that search either..which begs the question why did you suggest it you idiotic catalogue search.

So since the library doesn't have it, I'll have to get a copy.

Sandblasting

A quick experiment on how sandblasting a design on the front of the open cast pieces would look. A progression in the whole idea is to have a centre 'stone' that has no silhouette or shadow, all the animated characters will go through this one..like going into the woods...so this piece has to be different somehow. The test is with one of the pieces I am not using.

Big cat you tube clips

These have been very helpful, for getting the 'big cat' movements for Cinderella's last transformation. This is more for my records than for the few blog readers...though the pumpkins one is quite amusing

Sur La Lune's 'Library essentials month'

October is designated as "library essentials month' over at the Sur La Lune blog. This is a fairy tale resource that I have gone back to over and over again, one of the first I found on the internet...and I think the other day on the blog Heidi mentioned that the Sur La Lune website is pre google..and I think that sounds right. Anyway I have a feeling that I will eventually want all of her recommended library essentials.

I had an unscheduled visit to Fisher library this morning, where they have shelves and shelves on fairy and folk tales. Thanks to Heidi's list I was able to grab some that I knew would be good.

Not on the list but another book alert from Sur La Lune is  'The Fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm' published by Taschen. Here are some excerpts of the book from the Taschen website. It is of course available on Amazon.

Revelling in reading

credits to Sweets workshop blog
This short holiday (from uni) is of course dreary and wet, a rather grey contrast to the brilliantly sunny weeks that preceded it. However today was a "real' day off, no work of any sort. I checked out 'Sweets workshop' a two room gallery / shop just across the road from Summerhill train station. The window display had caught my eye the week before on the way to uni. Since paper cutting is in my sphere at the moment I braved the rain to go visit Nina May's 'Paper and the Blade' exhibition. The main wall in the gallery space showed a cluster of framed works with a range of themes. Some had fairytale origins, others portrayed a whimsical quirkiness that at times was humorous and lighthearted or otherwise a little melancholy. If  I could I would have 'Hills hoist girl'.

The remainder of my afternoon was spent searching for a second book in the opp shop so I could sit in a comfy chair in the cafe on the corner opposite the station drinking hot coffee, reading and eating pear and almond tart.

Once the rain had ceased sufficiently to walk home, I left one cozy spot to visit Ashfield library, which I haven't visited since the latest refurb. I got out more books, picked up some extra supplies for dinner and went home to read some more.

Postmodern reinterpretations of Fairytales

Postmodern Reinterpretations of Fairy Tales: How Applying New Methods Generates New Meanings edited by Anna Kerchy..blogged about by Surlalune, I really think this would be a good book for me to read in readyness for next year..but without seeing a copy, US$147.50 is a bit much....maybe I can suggest the library get a copy?

Glass elective with Susie Peck: 9

Rayzist, raaaaaaaaaaaaayzist!
Out of the hot shop this week, to experiment with Rayzist SSR3000. The Australian supplier is Problast.
Rayzist photomask is a self adhesive photo resist film that you can use for applying a detailed resist to glass for sandblasting. You can use it on other materials too.

Happy Birthday Harry!

My best friends little boy turned one today....there was a lovely party and I made a cut paper mobile for his room featuring the animals they have at home; Snowy the pony, Jasper the Border Collie and chickens (i don't know their names). It ended up so cute I almost didn't want to give it away.

Blowing with Tegan and then Kate

Tegan had the wonderful idea of making mini bubble nets for brooches. Smaller does not mean easier, amazing how often we forget that!

Understanding professional practice with Karin: 6

Knowing the business part 2: Today's class began with a presentation from Donna and Georgette? from Viscopy. I was charging the furnace today so I had a short reprieve while I sprinted back to the glass studio to lob batch into the furnace.
The second half of the lesson waaaaaas about selling: Consignment/Retail/Wholesale and deciding who was going to present when.

Leaves and trees (more of)

Shaping up a new clay mould, trying out forms that are raised and incised.

Into the kiln

Sharing two Kilns, I put my 'leaf inclusions' in with Sarah's teacup tests and in with Nadine some furnace glass for flattening. The leaf inclusions are going into one of my hot cast moulds, so the colour is gaffa glass. Red hot chilli and Ruby gold.

Studio day

A very botanical investing session. Tegan and I invested her 'seed pods' and I made an open faced mould for the leaf inclusions. We both had to quit at 12.30, Tegan for work and myself for a pre visitor tidy up at home.
